À distância de um braço é uma performance que apela a uma relação íntima com algumas das obras mais emblemáticas do MNAA e onde o gesto e a palavra procuram tornar manifestas as ligações invisíveis entre o corpo de quem vê e a obra que é vista, mas que também nos observa.

 

E se durante a visita ao museu, alguém nos fizesse atender à semelhança entre um detalhe do nosso rosto e o pormenor de uma das pinturas em exposição. E se a partir dessa ligação entre a pintura e o nosso corpo, se iniciasse um vaivém de gestos e palavras entre as características da pintura - o seu movimento implícito, a sua história - e a nossa condição de visitantes. 

 

Como dar a ver as ligações invisíveis entre o corpo de quem observa e a obra observada? Como descrever essas ligações e torná-las manifestas através do movimento, do gesto e da palavra? Como trazer para o mesmo plano o “passado” representado e o “presente” de cada visitante?

At arm’s length is a performance that calls for an intimate relationship with some of the most iconic works at the MNAA, where gesture and word seek to reveal the invisible connections between the body of the observer and the artwork being observed — which, in turn, also gazes back at us.

What if, during a visit to the museum, someone drew our attention to the resemblance between a detail of our own face and a feature in one of the paintings on display? And what if, from that connection between the painting and our body, a back-and-forth emerged — of gestures and words — between the painting’s characteristics — its implicit movement, its history — and our condition as visitors.

How can we make visible the invisible connections between the observer's body and the observed artwork? How can we describe these connections and make them manifest through movement, gesture, and word? How can we bring onto the same plane the represented “past” and the “present” of each visitor?
